How it works
- A public limited company (PLC) applies to list from its market page. The FCA approves it, and the company starts off holding every share. Its directors then offer shares for sale.
- To trade, open a company and place an order: how many shares, and your price for one share. A buy order's price is the most you'll pay; a sell order's is the least you'll take.
- Your order trades straight away with waiting orders at a price that fits: the best price first, and at the same price the oldest order first. The rest waits on the book until it's matched or you cancel it. One order trades with up to 5 waiting orders at a time; a "Keep matching" button carries on.
- Money moves between UnbelievaBoat bank balances. You need the money in your bank before you buy. Buyers pay 0.5% stamp duty on top, which goes to HM Treasury.
- The FCA can suspend trading in a company, cancel its open orders, or delist it. Directors can pay dividends to shareholders from the company's balance.
